I agree with Romee. You may leave the item in your cart for ages and then decide you don't want it after all, in the meantime someone else that may have wanted it, will miss out because you have it in your cart.
Maybe like Kristine says, if you put it in your cart then you have about 5 mins to go through to checkout before it is taken by someone else.
